President Negan

Since my family doesn’t have a true vacation planned until later in the fall (see Disney World – Day 5), we had the idea that this summer we would do some day trips. We decided that Hyde Park and Rhinebeck, NY would be the perfect location for one of our little local adventures.

Hyde Park

DSCN0091This small New York town is rich in American history. It is the birth place of our 32nd president, Franklin D. Roosevelt. My family is filled with U.S. history buffs, so it only seemed natural to start our adventure at Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s house and Presidential Library.

The library is currently featuring an exhibit called, “IMAGES OF INTERNMENT: THE INCARCERATION OF JAPANESE AMERICANS DURING WORLD WAR II.” It displays powerful photographs from FDR’s Executive Order 9066. You can see handful of these below.

The rest of the library features artifacts and documents on FDR’s presidency. My favorite part will always be the bits of history about his wife, Eleanor. Known for challenging what was expected of the First Lady role, she helped transform it for all that followed her. Constantly increasing her public presence in the media to discuss her humanitarian efforts and shedding light on the issues that she thought needed changes. She has been an inspiration to me my whole life.

No one can make you feel inferior without your consent. – Eleanor Roosevelt

Women are like teabags. You dont know how strong they are until you put them in hot water. – Eleanor Roosevelt

There have been many times in my life when I try to remind myself of those uplifting pieces of advice.

Our final experience at Hyde Park was exploring the beautiful grounds. We stopped by the house and the old stable (where I spotted a hidden Mickey), but the best part is the gorgeous rose garden where Franklin and Eleanor (and their dogs) are buried at FDR’s own request.

The FDR Library is a fantastic day trip for anyone looking for a little history and something different to do.

Rhinebeck, NY

Back in the car, we drove 20 minutes to Rhinebeck to enjoy a nice dinner and drinks as a family. However, there was one very important thing we had to do first…. We had to stop at Samuel’s Candy Store.

Samuel’s is an adorable candy store owned by Jeffery Dean Morgan, his wife Hilarie Burton, and Paul Rudd. Tom and I were on a mission to get revenge for our friend Glenn.. just kidding. For those of you who don’t know, that was a Walking Dead reference. Jeffery Dean Morgan plays Negan (SPOILER ALERT), who at the beginning of last season killed off our favorite character, Glenn. Walking Dead is our favorite show, so we were very excited to visit the store owned by an actor from the series.

After our sweet treats from Samuel’s, we walked over to Terrapin Restaurant, Bistro & Bar for dinner. Before our reservation, we enjoyed drinks at the bar because we have to have a drinkie-pooh! Tom ordered a Farmhouse Ale and I enjoyed a Dry-Hopped Sour. My dad also had beer and my mom ordered their special cocktail, a Watermelon Margarita. They made the watermelon juice fresh to order!

We sat outside for dinner and split a fantastic bottle of wine. For starters, I had the Lemongrass Crab Soup, Tom had the Tuscan Kale Salad with Pine Nuts, Sprout Creek Toussaint Cheese and Lemon Vinaigrette (this was my entree), my mom ordered the Horseradish Crusted Tuna with Miso Aioli Tapas, and my dad had the Seared Chile-Crusted Ahi Tuna with Citrus Aioli Salad.

For our entrees, I had the salad mentioned above, Tom and my mom both ordered bistro pastas (Uncle Vinny’s Special Rigatoni -Sautéed strips of chicken breast with spinach in a tomato-sherry sauce / Bowtie Pasta with Sweet Sausage, Garlic, Cream, Tomatoes and Broccoli Rabe), and my dad had the Pork Chop With apple demi-glace and topped with maple-bacon almonds. Sweet potato gratin and spinach. That sweet potato gratin was, as the kids are saying today, FIRE!

Review: I give Terrapin 3.5 out of 5 stars. The food was excellent, but we felt it was a little expensive for what we were getting. The atmosphere was very nice, but there were so many flies outside. I definitely say give this place a try if you are in the area just be aware of these things.

Back at my parents, we all enjoyed truffles we bought from the candy store and then we drifted off to sleep happy and full.

BLOOPERS: Here is what happens when you give my dad the camera. He’s hilarious!
